Central Florida's Top 10 Springs
Scuba divers, manatees

Blue Spring State Park is a haven for manatees, scuba divers and nature lovers in west Volusia County. The park is along the St. Johns River and spans roughly 2,644 acres west of Orange City, about 35 minutes north of Orlando. The park has become an ecological tourist destination in Central Florida because it is a manatee magnet. During cool weather, the lumbering sea cows are lured to the warm spring waters at the park.
Manatee watching is so popular, park officials sometimes are forced to restrict access because of limited parking. Expect crowds during festivals and weekends, especially during the winter. The clear water is a constant 73 degrees, according to the Florida Division of Recreation and Parks. The water is also popular with snorkelers and scuba divers. Swiming and diving are not allowed from Nov. 15 to March 1 to protect the manatees.
Horseback riding, hiking, canoeing
Silver Glen Springs Located in the middle of the western shore of Lake George, it was a safe harbor when the sudden storms occurred on the huge lake, connected to it by a half-mile-long run," U.S. Forest Service archaeologist Ray Willis said. "Plus it was surrounded by nice high ground with all sorts of food animals."
Today it is one of the region's most popular boating destinations. The swimming area is roped off from the run, a popular destination of boaters. On holiday weekends, as many as 800 boats line the run. Swimming, tubing, canoeing, hiking and boating. A 2-mile nature trail parallels Lake George. Swimming, tubing, canoeing, hiking and boating.
Silver Springs in the early 1500s. During the 1850s, the springs became the focal point of shipping, with steamboats coming via the Silver River to deliver supplies and tourists. The window gave a great view of the waters teeming with fish, turtles, crustaceans and fossils thousands of years old.
Glass-bottom boat rides, Lost River Voyage, Fort King River Cruise, Jeep Safari, non-poisonous snake and reptile shows. The attraction also has live concerts.
Juniper Springs has a nice, cement-and-rock-rimmed swimming area and brand-new concession stand and restroom facilities -- but its main attraction is a tough canoe run. The first half of the 7-mile Juniper Creek canoe trail is a twisting, narrow channel with some fallen trees offering just 18 inches of clearance was just an area where the underground water seeped out of the ground.
There was no central pool. It was a popular hunting area, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service reportedly visited the hunt camps, gathering material for her novels. There are 77 campsites and canoe rentals are available at conveniently located docks. You're likely to see deer, turkeys, alligators and, even, black bears.
Salt Springs water flows up through a limestone layer loaded with mineral salts making the springs salty enough to support marine species such as mullet, redfish, mangrove snapper and bushels of blue crabs. The run is 4.2 miles long and is a popular destination for boaters. With 90 acres of land cleared for use, the area is primarily for camping, hiking and picnickers. Hiking trails through the surrounding woods offer chances to see deer, turkeys and perhaps a bear.
The 2-mile-long Bear Swamp hiking trail takes visitors through a bottomland cypress ecosystem with woodpeckers, deer, raccoons and black bear. There are 164 campsites, 106 with full hookups. A camp store carries the bare necessities. Across the run is the Salt Springs Marina that rents canoes, outboard-powered johnboats and outboard-powered pontoon boats daily.
Alexander Spring's Timucuan Indians occupied the site as long as 7,000 years ago, according to remains of small shell middens. In the 1800s, residents of nearby Astor Park set up turpentine operations along the run. The U.S. Forest Service purchased Alexander Spring in the 1930s, and it was developed as a recreation area in the 1950s.
There is a 7-1/2-mile canoe run that takes 4-5 hours to complete, and canoers are met by a vehicle to take them back to the recreation area. A 1.08-mile Timucuan Indian walk, a boardwalk to the creek where you can view the diverse fish life, a swimming beach and 67 campsites also additional offerings to travelers. There is also a camp store with necessities such as charcoal, propane, insect spray and snacks.
Wekiwa Springs Humans have populated the springs "since before some of the pyramids were built in Egypt," Eldredge said. A farming community developed around the springs. During the Civil War, it was the site of a Confederate cannon-ball foundry. In the early 1900s, settlers saw the recreation potential and built the first "toboggan water slide" into the springs. The state bought the land in 1969 and opened the park in 1970.
There are picnic tables, grills, a playground and a 13-mile hiking trail through the flatwoods. An 8-mile horse-riding trail snakes its way across the park. The campground has 60 sites for tents and RVs. The park also boasts a 7-1/2-mile canoe run.
Rock Springs Young children splashed and whooped in the swimming area. It was anything but serene.Yet, a hundred yards away, at the end of the yet-to-be-filled parking lot, a doe browsed unconcernedly among the high grass and brush.
Rock Springs Run is for tubers. Since the park doesn't rent inner tubes, you stop at a concessionaire before you enter the park. The nearest rental is at the Rock Springs Bar and Grill. There is a two-mile nature trail. The tubing run is three-fourths of a mile. The park has 26 campsites: 21 with electric hookups, three primitive and two group campsites.
DeLeon Springs this area dates back 6,000 years when Native Americans used and visited the springs here. In the early 1800s, sugar and cotton plantations were built by settlers but they later were sacked by the Seminole Indians during the Second Seminole War. Now, there is a swimming area and picnic grounds as well as walking trails. Canoes, kayaks and paddleboats can be rented and taken on the spring run, which flows into the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. Near the swimming area is the Old Spanish Sugar Mill Restaurant, where you can make your own pancakes on griddles built into the table.
